PGCE

Before Module three officially starts, I thought I would write a post on applying for a PGCE for anyone who might want some info about it!

So yes, you can go on to do a PGCE after this course! I think you can pretty much do a PGCE after any degree, as long as it is a Hons.

When initially starting the course I did so with the aim of going onto doing a PGCE afterwards. I changed my mind a couple of times during the first two modules and then made a firm decision to go ahead and apply!

Why do I want to do a PGCE?

  • I love teaching, so it seems more natural to go from dancing to teaching in a school, rather than go down a completely different career path.
  • I love dance teaching, but the hours can be unsociable (evenings and weekends) and as I would like my own family one day, I would like a career with hours that could suit a family life better.
  • Steady, stable income. Dance teaching is self employed and if you don't work, you don't get paid, simple as that!
  • After doing work experience in a school I realised how much I would suit and would enjoy this job.
  • I'm not afraid of hard work. A PCGE and being a teacher is not an easy job.

I have accepted a place at Chester Uni to start in September. I was also successful at LJMU and Edge Hill, but decided on Chester, as it is closest to me and will save a fortune in travel and also a lot of time.

The application progress.

The Get Into Teaching website is really helpful. So i'd advise signing up to that.
Create your UCAS account.
Decide what Uni's which you want to apply for and go to their open days if you can make it.
C or above in GCSE Maths and English is required.
Minimum of 10 days work experience in a school (aside from it being necessary for the application, you should do this anyway to see if it is something that will actually be right for you) I did meet a girl  at a uni interview who had no work experience, but said in her application she would be getting some and still got offers. try and get work experience in different schools e.g; state school and private school. If you are going for primary, try and get a bit of experience in year 7 and nursery and vice versa for early years/secondary.
Write a great personal statement. If you teaching dance/drama like most of us do on the ouches write about that. If you have performed then definitely include that (every single uni I went for took a great interest in my work on cruise ships during my interview).
You'll need an academic reference, I used Paula (my tutor and course leader during module one) and an employer reference (I used the head of the school I was doing my work experience at).

The Interview process

After applying through UCAS you will receive info on whether you have been accepted and what to prepare.
For me this included;
A presentation about an educational issue.
Tests in numeracy and literacy (don't worry about these, I definitely didn't do great, it's just to assess what you already know)
Interview.
Group task.
Read up on current educational issues.
Bring GCSE certificates and proof of I.D.

Make sure you;
Arrive on time
Dress Smart
Bring all the necessary paper work.
Be confident.

After the interview.

You'll hopefully get offers for your Uni's.
Firstly you'll need to decide where to go. You'll have around 10 days to decide after receiving your final offer.
Skills tests in numeracy and literacy (you have to pass these to do the course, just before I wrote this they changed it to an unlimited number of tests to pass (used to be three) and you get three tests paid for you (instead of just one!) Great news!
You'll have to gain a DBS.
And a specified grade in your degree (usually 2:1 or 2:2)

Hopefully all will go to plan and you can start your PGCE and also apply for student loan, maintenance loan and maintenance grant (depending on where you live, age, income parents income etc)

I'm really excited (and nervous) to start in September (all being well).
If anyone has anymore questions i'd be happy to help x
