Task 6B - Inquiry Tools

This task asks us to critical reflect on the tools used to address our inquiry.

Questionnaires - After reading through reader 6 I have decided the way way to produce my questionnaire would be through a source such as survey monkey. I will ask questions aim at dancers who have undergone dancer trainings for more than ten years under the age of eighteen or three years at a professional college.

I will mainly use statements in my questionnaires which will have a multiple choice answer to rate the sentence, for example highly likely to highly unlucky etc.
I intend to ask many participants to complete this for me, however I do not expect that everyone will will this out, as reader 6 says to expect only a 20% repossess rate.

Advantages -
Ease of use for participants
Can collect lots of data in a short space of time
If kept to quantitive data they can be easily evaluated.
Less time consuming than other methods.

Disadvantages -
Rely's on use of internet for participants.
Low response rate.
Developing questions could be difficult.

Interviews - I plan to interview dance teachers for my interview. I would like to interview dance teachers from different areas, who teach different ages and have varying experience.

  1. A new dance Teacher
  2. An experienced teacher teaching in a private after school dance school.
  3. A principal of an after school dance school.
  4. A teacher in a professional college.
  5. A principal of a professional college.
  6. A freelance/guest teacher.
I feel that this will cover many areas of the dance education world, the teachers will be taken from different areas and the age range they teach should vary from 2-21. I would also like to interview at least one male teacher.
I would ideally like to do face-to-face interviews, however if I am unable to do this I will do a Skype call interview.

I will produce a semi-structured interview for all these interviews. However I will leave myself time to talk about any themes or issues that may come up.
There will also be a mixture of both open and closed questions.
I will be careful not to use any leading questions.
As ideal as it would be to hold all the interviews in a neutral ground, this is just not practical. So I will probably hold the interviews in the dance schools or Skype calls from home.
All interviews will use the same questions, however I will be asking some non-set questions if necessary.
I will take notes during the interview and i will also voiced record the interview with permission from the participant. I do not feel it would be necessary or beneficial to film the interview.

Advantages -
Adaptable.
Rich source of information.

Can be easily repeated.
Can be easily adapted if a theme or issue arises.

Disadvantages -
Time consuming.
Interviewer could influence answers.
Could potentially intemperate answers wrongly.

Observations - As with my interview, I would like to observe different classes. to be able to collect reliable data. It is a great way of taking a step back to look at how others do things.

  • A class with younger pupils at a dance school.
  • A class with an older class at a dance school.
  • A class at a dance college.

Observations can provide a rich source of information and as i do not want to interviews or use children for questionnaires for ethical reasons, this allows me to observe their behaviour to add another element to my inquiry research. I will only take notes to record my observations for ethical purposes.
This will provide qualitative data, however I also intend to record used a quantitive nature - by recording the amount of times a certain behaviour is observed from the pupils or teacher, both verbal and non verbal (kinesics). For example to amount of times praised is used. How many times the teacher has to raise her voice. How many times there is laughter etc.

Advantages -
Rich source of information.
Different element to research rather than just questioning participants

Disadvantages-
Time consuming.
Ethical considerations.

Using documents.

Advantages -
Valuable qualitative method.
Good for gaining a different perspective.
Expanding ones knowledge.
As it is existing knowledge there should already be research and evidence.

Disadvantages -
Could be outdated.

I am choosing not to use focus groups as a means to gather information for my enquiry. As many dancers and teachers work on a self employed basis there is no 'staff room' where we all congregate. We all work different times and in different areas, and many often balance teaching with studying (like myself) or families etc., so I know this would be very difficult to arrange.
